What is a timer switch?
Timer switches are more than an on/off switch, they enable the automatic switching of electronic devices, lights, and fans. Some timer switches offer scheduling to switch the device on or off at specified times. Also known as a lighting timer or timer relay and available in pneumatic, analogue, digital or smart timer switch options, the Clipsal range of timer switches have a solution for most applications.
Pneumatic Timer Switches
Pneumatic timer switches are air-valve operated to delay the turning off between periods of 30 seconds and up to 20 minutes depending on the Pneumatic Timer Switch used. Pneumatic timer switches are not precise; however they are rugged, robust, and are specifically designed to withstand harsh treatment in high traffic areas. The hose proof model carries an IP56 rating making them ideal for both indoor and outdoor wet areas including bathrooms, laundries, atriums, saunas, hot tubs, pool and spa pumps.
Electric Timer Switches
Also known as a digital timer switch or electronic timer switch, these devices offer more precise control of lights and other devices up to 10 Amps. They have an optional LED indicator light and provide timing between one minute and up to 15 hours. Their tamper-proof configuration is typically managed through dip switches on the back making them ideal for public places. Commonly used as a lighting timer for both domestic and commercial lighting control.
Analog Timer Switches
Also known as analogue timer switches or mechanical timer switches, are adjustable time schedulers that turn devices on and off at specific times during the day. Rated to up to 15 Amps, these analog timers are suitable for more heavier loads.
Sunset Switches
As sunrise and sunset times fluctuate throughout the year, timer switches often need adjustments to align to this cycle. A sunset switch offers a convenient solution, automatically turning your lights on at dusk and off at dawn. The lux level setting is adjustable from 20 to 500 lux and determines when the lighting should turn on giving flexibility to the mounting location. Additionally, sunset switches have a timer adjustment, allowing lighting to be activated for a preset time of 2, 4, 6, 8 or 12 hours.
DIN Rail Timers and Relays
For timer control and scheduling of an entire electrical circuit, Schneider Electric DIN rail timers or DIN rail relays are your ideal solution. Mounted in your electrical distribution board, these timers offer tamper-proof scheduling.
How to choose the right timer?
When selecting a timer controller switch, consider where it will be used, what it will control and what features you need.
- Pneumatic, analogue, or digital timers are suitable for simple residential and commercial applications where basic delayed switching or scheduling is needed.
- DIN Rail Timers are perfect for commercial or industrial applications where tamper proof settings are essential.
- 56 Series Industrial Timers suit heavy-duty applications up to 16A and are available in either push button or rotary options.
