What is a junction box?
An electrical junction box, also known as a “J-box”, is an enclosure used to connect, terminate, and protect electrical wires from damage and the elements. General-purpose junction boxes are ideal for use in roof cavities, while PVC junction boxes for conduit applications are perfect for exposed wiring. Larger junction boxes, also known as “adaptable boxes”, are ideal for wiring, mounting, and protecting electrical components. Junction boxes are available in PVC, HFT, and metal to suit your next electrical installation.
What is the difference between a PVC, HFT and metal junction box?
- PVC (Polyvinyl chloride) is a cost-effective thermoplastic material with excellent UV resistance and an operational temperature between -15°C to +65°C. Some PVC junction boxes are ideal for use with corrosive and industrial chemicals, animal fats, oils, solvents, and lubricants. Explore the PVC junction box range.
- HFT is a type of halogen-free plastic. During a fire, halogens in traditional plastic release harmful gasses. HFT is ideal for exposed areas in buildings, making it safer for people to exit in the case of a fire. The operational temperature of a HFT junction box is between -40°C to +140°C. Explore the HFT junction box range.
- Metal junction boxes are strong and ideal for industrial, commercial, and hazardous applications where impact or fire protection is needed. Explore the metal junction box range.
What types of junction boxes are available?
General Purpose Wiring
- Indoor PVC junction boxes, available in 30A, 40A with either loose connectors or fixed terminals. Explore the general purpose PVC junction box range.
PVC Conduit
- PVC round junction boxes are available in 16mm, 20mm, 25mm connections with either 1, 2, 3 or 4 way entry. There are deep and shallow versions to suit your electrical needs. Explore the PVC round junction box range.
- PVC square junction boxes are available in 40mm, 50mm connections with either 1, 2 or 3 way entry. Explore the PVC square junction box range.
- HFT junction boxes are available in 25mm, 35mm connections with 4 way entry. Explore the HFT junction box range.
- Adaptable boxes are rated IP56 and range in size from 77mm x 77m x 54mm to 300mm x 200mm x 200mm. They are typically used to connect wires and protect electrical components. Explore the adaptable box range.
Metal
- Metal junction boxes are available in 20mm, 25mm connections with either 1,2,3 or 4 way entry. Explore the metal junction box range.
- Metal junction boxes with gasket are ideal for outdoor applications and are rated to IP66. These products contain a ‘H’ in the part number, example: 1239H20/2.
How to choose the right junction box?
Junction boxes come in various shapes and sizes while offering different levels of protection. To select the right junction box, consider the installation environment:
- Indoor and dry environments, a general-purpose junction box with 30A or 40A connectors is suitable for most general-purpose wiring applications. For exposed wiring applications, a PVC conduit junction box and fittings are required. In an environment prone to damage, a metal junction box and fittings are required.
- Outdoor or wet environments, consider the level of protection required for your application and choose an appropriate junction box. Adaptable boxes come with a gasket seal for the removable cover and conduit connections that will require silicone sealant. If the environment is prone to damage, a metal junction box with gasket seal for the removable cover and fittings are required.
Remember: This is a general guide. All electrical work must be performed by a qualified electrician.
