The ATV212 can also operate synchronous permanent magnet motors, if you have software version V5.4 IE53 . You need to exactly follow the procedure in the ATV212 Programming Manual ( S1A538838 11/14).

How can I solve an OBF fault on ATV58?

If the drive indicates the OBF fault  it is caused by over braking.

This is caused when the drive's DC bus voltage exceeds the permitted voltage threshold within the drive. The drive indicates the OBF fault and puts the motor in to freewheel stop mode.

There are three possible solutions:

1. If the load can be stopped in a longer ramp down time then a simple adjustment of the DEC ramp time may be all that is required.

2. Brake ramp adaptation

This is a internal parameter inside the drive which monitors the DC bus level, if the load is being ramped down and the DC bus voltage increases too much , the BRA parameter takes effect. The drive no longer brakes the load, which then switches to "freewheel" mode, so there is no more excess energy to be absorbed by the drive and the capacitors are no longer charged. On the contrary, as they discharge and the DC bus voltage decreases until it reaches a minimum threshold below which braked stopping on ramp is re-enabled.

The load is stopped by a succession of braked stops and freewheel stops, the braking is optimized but has a variable duration if the inertia of the load is constantly changing. The effect you see on the load is that the motor takes longer to stop than the programmed Deceleration time, which in some applications is undesirable.

To set this function:

Settings (SET) > Drive menu(DRC)  => Stt = Stn = > brA = yes

3. Braked stop by using a braking resistor

In this option the extra energy generated is transmitted to a braking resistor and is dissipated by the Joule effect.  If the braking resistor is correctly sized, the load can be stopped according to the period configured by the deceleration ramp parameter, irrespective of  the  inertia of the load.

The wiring of the resister is between terminals PA and PB. and the drive settings are as follows:

Drive menu => Stt = Stn  => brA = no.

Do power wires need to be installed in separate conduits for AC drives?

Issue:
Power wires installation for AC drives

Product Line:
Altivar drives

Environment:
All

Cause:
Installation

Resolution:
Good wiring practice requires the separation of control wiring from power wiring. Power wiring to the motor must have the maximum possible separation from all other power wiring, whether from the same drive controller or other drive controllers. Do not run power and control wiring, or multiple power wiring, in the same conduit. This separation reduces the possibility of coupling electrical transients from power circuits into control circuits or from motor power wiring into other power circuits.
Use of special shielded cables does not reduce or eliminate the need for cable separation.
Please refer to the installation documents for more information.

Basic wiring examples

Resolution:

IFrame

The S6U requires constant 120VAC to terminals CL1 (hot) and CL2 (neutral).

For a freewheel stop:
Connect a jumper from Terminal LI1 to LI2.
Connect a jumper from Terminal CL2 to COM.
Close a dry contact between Terminals CL1 and LI2 for a run forward.  Open this connection for a freewheel stop.

For a controlled stop:
Do not jumper LI1 to LI2, wire LI1 to CL1, use run contact between CL1 and LI2, and program SEt - dEC = ramp down time.
diagram

Note: The factory default setting for the dEC parameter is 'free'. Leaving this parameter set to 'free' will provide a freewheel stop, regardless of which way LI1 and LI2 are wired. (This is why the Quick Start Guide shows a wiring diagram similar to the one above and indicates that it allows a freewheel stop.) Conversely, removing voltage from LI1 will result in a freewheel stop, regardless of the value set for dEC. In other words, a freewheel stop can be accomplished by wiring and/or programming.

Refer to the ATS22 User manual, ATS22 Quick Start Guide, or the Quick Start Annex for more information.

Is a Line Contactor ahead of the soft start required as referred to in the ATS22 users manual?

Issue:
Is a Line contactor required ahead of the soft start?

Product Line:
Altistart 22, ATS22

Environment:
All models and serial numbers

Cause:
None

Resolution:
The purpose of the line contactor is to provide a means of removing AC line voltage from the softstart.  Due to leakage currents through the solid state switches, hazardous voltages can be present on the load side of the softstarter when power is applied to the line side of the softstarter.
Also, the line contactor can be controlled to open if the ATS22 faults.  Some faults are the result of SCRs shorting.  If multiple SCRs fail in a shorted condition, full voltage power passes through and will either single phase or continue to run the motor.  The KM1 would interrupt  the power circuit.

A line or isolation contactor such as KM1 shown in wiring diagrams, located in the Annex of the ATS22 Users Manual (BBV51330) is strongly suggested but not required.

What are the differences between the various tripping classes of thermal overload?

There are multiple classes of thermal overload relay.

These class numbers indicate the trip characteristics from cold state, and should be selected according to the starting characteristics of the motor and its application. Below is a table giving the characteristics for each class

Ir = Current setting of overload relay. This should be the Full Load Current (FLC or FLA) shown on motor rating plate. For the vast majority of applications 10A will be the first choice.

What is the C-Bus Network state error mean

The status of a Component's network can be displayed using the View | Component Label | Network Status menu item. An X indicates that the Component's Network is off-line and can not be controlled. A ? indicates that the Component's Network has been opened and that the state is not known but it may be possible to control the Group Address.

The status of all of the Networks can be viewed by selecting the View | Network States menu item. The possible network states are :

·New - the network has not been opened yet (usually caused by a failure to open the network)

·Open - the network has been opened, but the synchronisation process has not started

·Sync - the network is being synchronised (the progress will be shown *)

·OK - the network has been synchronised and is ready for use

·Error - the network has an error. (the cause of the error condition will be shown)

·Closed - network has not opened (usually caused by a failure to open the network)

·Operational - the network is open and can be used, but there are units not responding (see C-Gate Options). Note that this was previously referred to as the "degraded" state.

* For the Sync and Error states, it will show "unit x of y". This refers to the xth unit out of a total of y units. It does not refer to the unit addresses.

Any units which are in error state will be listed. If any units are in error state, this should be investigated. If too many units are in the error state, the whole network will be put into the error state, and it will be unable to be used.

Cause:
Checking diodes to see if they are shorted.

Resolution:
Before starting, make sure you turn off ALL POWER on the drive.  Wait 15 mins, so that the DC bus has time to discharge below 24vdc on PA+ and PC-.
Using a multi-meter with a diode checker , measure between the DC Bus terminals PA/+ to L1-L2-L3 , then reverse the meter leads and read again between PA/+ to L1-L2-L3.  In one direction, you should read 0.30 to 0.60, and in the reverse direction you should read OL.  Repeat this measurement with the blue wire (PC/-) on the J18 connector or on the (PC-) terminal.  If "shorted circuit" is read in any of the readings, repair or replace the drive is recommended.

Video: What causes an StF fault on an Altistart 22 Soft Starter?

Issue:
Troubleshooting StF Fault on Altistart 22

Product Line:
ATS22 Soft Starter

Environment:
All models

Cause:
The StF fault means the starter has exceeded the maximum start time setting, tLS, in the SEt menu.

Resolution:
tLS needs to be set higher than the ACC time.
For example:  If ACC (ramp up time) is 10 seconds, then set the tLS max starting time to 20 seconds.

If ILt current limit is too low, the motor may not reach full speed within tLS limit.
Mechanical problems on the load may prevent the motor from reaching full speed within tLS limit.
See page 51 in the ATS22 User Manual:

The following video is a guide for troubleshooting the StF fault code, indicating a longer than expected start-up time, on the Altistart ATS22 soft starter by adjusting the tLS (maximum start time in seconds) and ACC (ramp up time) parameters under the SET menu. tLS must be set higher then the ACC time value.
