Get the basics right

Power points and lighting are the electrical foundation for your kitchen. Other elements to consider are USB charging, sensors for water leaks, and smart home connectivity.

Power points: Think about which appliances you use regularly and want on the bench, such as an espresso machine, toaster, or smart speaker, as well as other items you might use occasionally, like a food processor. Where do you want to use them? Allow enough power points in the right places, plus a couple of extras so you don’t need to move things around. Power points at the end of island benches are handy for laptops too.

Power points with built-in USB charging ports make life much easier. USB-C is now the more common industry standard connection and you can add a USB Type-C Fast Charger to Clipsal Iconic power points. Light it up

Task lighting above benches is crucial – downlights and LED strip lights are perfect for this. A motion sensor is useful in the pantry too, so a light turns on automatically when you walk in.

Add warmth to the space with a soft glow from LED strip lighting under island benches, open shelving, cupboards, or on toe kicks.

A feature light at the end or middle of an island adds flair, while spotlights can highlight art works or other displays too.

Help keep your home and family safe

Kitchens are one of the busiest and most appliance-heavy areas in the home, so switchboard safety is key.

Talk to your electrician about installing RCBOs and Arc Fault Detection Devices (which detect arc faults, one of the most common causes of electrical fires) in your switchboard for extra peace of mind.

You could also add a Surge Protection Device to help protect your appliances and electronic equipment from lightning strikes, power surges and voltage strikes.
